All materials published on this web site are related to Childhood Cancer Department of the National Cancer Institute at the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences. All information about children is published only after a meeting of President of Kiev Charitable Organization – Childhood Cancer Foundation “Crab” with parents and a child.
When child arrives at Childhood Cancer Department, he/she gets diagnosis, neoplasm detects, its type. Then doctor prescribes treatment protocol. According to this protocol chemotherapy blocks start. One block can consist of several chemotherapies. Distance between blocks – 21 days. During this time a child goes through chemotherapy dropper, than he survives the decrease of analysis, waits for leucocytes, thrombocytes, hemoglobin get back to normal and than start next block.
Chemotherapy is to localize neoplasm, to put it into “capsule”, so it can be removed with operation. After operation chemotherapy blocks continue in accordance with treatment protocol to kill singular cancer cells that still left. This is the most common used procedure. Sometimes treatment can start with operation, and after operation chemotherapy starts. This principle is worldwide. Treatment lasts from 6 months till 1,5 year.
The most expensive treatment is chemotherapy itself. Despite that most of medicine is provided by government, some medicine parents have to buy themselves. No less expensive is post chemotherapy complications. Against the background of low analysis any illness can happen to a child. Therefore children wear gauze bandage on the face – to protect from infection.
During recovering period it could be a need for some type of antibiotics, medicine from stomatitis, cough, antifever, etc. Some children may need donor blood. The more chemotherapy child gets the harder for organism to recover. All children at the department stay with one of the parent. If you want to help – call a parent, ask how you can help the child right now. Bought or brought medicine, warm supportive words, something tasty – any help will be appreciated.
There are children from all over Ukraine in Cancer Department. Perhaps, thanks to you, a child could see the beauty of Kyiv not only from the medical window.
It is important to care not only with money. Support in overcoming dependence from the disease, belief in positive treatment outcome is also very important.
Children from all over Ukraine come to National Cancer Institute to get the diagnosis. Family rooms, that are in department can fit limited amount of people. Perhaps, you live at Golosievsky district in Kyiv and can host a family for a couple of nights. Or maybe you can help to employ one of the parent during his/her child gets treatment at the hospital.
Very often examination of consultation with medical specialist is assigned at other medical institutions in Kyiv. Parents who came from other part of the Ukraine need to get there themselves.
